Family events: planning restrooms for children and companions

At a family event, a restroom visit often involves more than one person: a child and companion, a parent with a pushchair, or someone who needs assistance moving around. These requirements are worth describing before equipment is selected. The aim is a clear route and a suitable arrangement for the people attending, without assuming that every attractive or spacious trailer automatically meets every need.

Describe how people will use the facilities

Alongside total attendance, explain whether young children are expected and whether there are particular companion or access requirements. You do not need to share names or health information to describe a practical need. For example, ask whether the proposed space is suitable for use with a companion, or what arrangement is available for someone unable to use steps. The answer needs to relate to the specific installation.

Review the complete route to the entrance

A position close to the activities is not necessarily easy to reach. Review the ground, changes in level, lighting and space in front of the entrances. The published collection photographs show steps, so the presence of a trailer is not confirmation of step-free access. Discuss any specific arrangement separately with the organiser and venue lead before finalising the selection.

Make directions simple for the accompanying adult

Signs are most useful when they are visible from the places families already use. Plan a route that avoids unloading and working areas. If there are several restroom locations, explain which one serves each activity area. Allow for waiting and a pushchair stopping briefly without blocking entrances. Supervision of children remains the responsibility of their accompanying adults and the event organiser.

Ask explicitly about facilities a photograph cannot confirm

Do not treat a washbasin counter as a baby-changing station or assume that room size alone accommodates every form of assistance. If a changing facility or specific equipment is needed, request explicit confirmation of its availability and location from those responsible. Floor plans and photographs support the conversation, but do not replace confirmation of suitable equipment. This gives the organiser time to address any gap.

Connect care arrangements to the day’s programme

Breaks between activities can concentrate restroom use. Plan when tissue, soap, hand towels and the condition of the facilities will be checked, according to the services agreed. Decide who receives a practical concern from a visitor and how the team is informed. Add the programme and family requirements to the quote enquiry notes so they can be discussed alongside the number and type of units.

Keep these notes

  • Age groups and specific companion requirements
  • Route, steps and access requirements
  • Clear signs and unobstructed entrances
  • Explicit confirmation of each specific facility
  • A care contact and agreed checking schedule
